Why the Most Exciting Candle on the Chart Is Usually the Worst Time to Act

Chasing a spike feels smart in the moment. Here's what experienced chart readers do instead.

You open the chart and there it is: a huge green candle. Then another. Then a third. Everyone in the comments is excited. Your gut says get in now, before it’s too late.

That feeling has a name among traders: FOMO, fear of missing out. And acting on it has a name too: chasing.

Why chasing feels right

Our brains are wired to follow momentum. When something moves fast and everyone is talking about it, joining feels safe. It’s the same instinct that makes people join the longest line at a food truck.

On a chart, though, that instinct often puts you in at the worst possible moment.

What usually happens after a spike

After a sharp run, price is stretched. The people who bought early start taking profits. New buyers get more cautious. Very often, price pauses or pulls back.

So the moment the chart looks most exciting is often the moment the move is most tired. Chasing means buying exactly when the risk is highest and the remaining upside is smallest.

The more exciting a chart looks, the more careful you should be.

What experienced chart readers do instead
